Socorro ISD's growth fuels projects

EL PASO - Socorro ISD is now the second largest school district in El Paso. The district has 45,000 registered students for the fall semester, more than Ysleta ISD's latest enrollment figures of 43,500.

As a result of the rapid growth in the area, the school district has taken on several projects.

Swamp coolers were replaced with refrigerated air at six elementary schools and refrigerated air will be installed at the remaining six elementary schools next year. Cost for the replacement for refrigerated air will total $56 million by 2013.

Construction of Eastlake High School and the conversion of the El Dorado Ninth Grade Academy into a high school will be completed by June 2013.

Construction of two elementary schools are scheduled for completion June 2015. Construction is expected to be complete on a new kindergarten through eighth grade school in August 2014.
